CEDAR CITY — Cedar City Police have recently started publicizing a national safety campaign known as the “9 p.m. Routine.”
The initiative is designed to remind residents to make sure they lock up each night before they go to bed.
“It’s a campaign that has happened in many states across the U.S., and several agencies have seen a decrease in their property crimes,” Cedar City Police Sgt. Clint Pollock told Cedar City News. “Our hope is to see the same in our city.”
Pollock said Cedar City averages about 10 vehicle burglary reports a month.
“The majority of them are unlocked vehicles,” he said. “We want to see everyone lock their doors and be vigilant.”
In the Cedar City Police Department’s initial Facebook post about the campaign on July 3, it was suggested that residents take a few minutes to do a security check of their vehicles and property each evening.
As you go through your nightly routine, whether it is spending time with your family, watching your favorite television show, or reading a bedtime story, please include taking a few extra moments to make sure your home, vehicle, and garage doors are closed, locked, and secure.
Police suggest that residents pay particular attention to the following:
- Roll up all vehicle windows, lock doors and remove all valuables or weapons from the vehicle.
- Make sure exterior doors to the home are locked and that garage doors are lowered and secure.
- Leave on an exterior light at night or install a motion-activated sensor.
- Report any suspicious activity in the neighborhood.
“Please partner with us, your neighbors, and our community to help stop these types of crimes of opportunity with this proven and effective program,” the post said.
Police say that although 9 p.m. is the time specifically suggested by the campaign, people are encouraged to follow the safety and security suggestions at any or all times throughout the day and make it a regular habit.
“It is called the #9PMRoutine, but it should be practiced 24 hours a day,” the post added.
