Cars collide at St. George’s second-most dangerous intersection

ST. GEORGE — Authorities transported a woman to the hospital Saturday afternoon following an accident at one of St. George’s most dangerous intersections.

The collision between a black Chevrolet Trailblazer and a silver Kia Rio happened at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Dixie Drive, said George Police officer Trevor Anderson.

Officers arrived to find both vehicles heavily damaged and partially blocking the intersection. The Kia driver sustained a laceration to her head and was transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, Anderson said. Police said the driver of Trailblazer was later cited for failing to yield on a left-hand turn.

During a one-month period, there were 35 crashes reported at Sunset Boulevard and Dixie Drive, placing the intersection at No. 2 on the list of the most dangerous intersections in St. George.

The only intersection that ranks higher on the list, according to St. George police, is 1000 East and St. George Boulevard, which hosted 40 collisions reported during the same period.

The impact of Saturday’s accident spun both vehicles around, causing them to block several lanes of traffic.

Both drivers were properly seat-belted at the time of the crash, the officer added, and the two vehicles sustained extensive damage and were subsequently towed from the scene. Traffic was impacted for nearly an hour while responders tended to the scene.

Additional officers were called in to divert traffic away from the crash.
