ST. GEORGE — A brush fire on Interstate 15 just south of St. George is causing delays for drivers near the entrance of the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona.

Update 7:25 p.m. The fire has been extinguished and the roadway is now fully open.

“We have a commercial vehicle that lost a 48 foot trailer southbound on interstate 15 approximately 3 1/2 miles south of the Utah state line,” Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Bottoms said. “The highway is partially blocked and the incident has started a large brush fire on the interstate.”

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the freeway is closed in both directions. The closure is at milepost 26 and is just southwest of Black Rock Road.

There is no estimated time to reopen either direction of I-15, and there is no alternate route.
