PROVO (AP) — Data shows the number of students home-schooled in Utah has more than doubled.

The Daily Herald reported Tuesday that the Utah State Board of Education recorded more than 16,000 home-school students during the 2015-16 school year, the most recent year with available data.

Nearly 17% of the students were in the boundaries of the Alpine School District, about 6% were in the Nebo School District and nearly 3% were in the Provo School District.

The state recorded more than 7,000 home-school students in 2003.

The state requires families to submit an affidavit to their school district if they’re home schooling. The families are not required to provide a reason for home schooling or maintain attendance or instruction records.
