CEDAR CITY — Southern Utah University is inviting the community to chalk the town with color at the “Gone with the Rain: Chalk the Walk Festival” to be held July 6 at Cedar City Main Street Park.
Cedar City residents, students and artists are invited to express their creativity while helping raise funds for SUU’s College of Performing and Visual Arts students, the university stated in a press release. Artists of all levels — from stick-figure to Monet — are welcome.
“The Gone with the Rain: Chalk the Walk Festival is a great way for people to engage in artwork,” Shauna Mendini, dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, said in the press release. “We hope the community will come out and work side-by-side with SUU students and create something beautiful together. It is a wonderful opportunity to support the college, the students, and the arts while having a great time.”
The event is organized by the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts Advisory Board. The advisory board helps raise funds for experiential learning opportunities for SUU art students.
Registration for the event is available online. Early registration is $25 for each artist block and can consist of a team of up to four chalk artists. Each additional participant is $5. The price for entry rises to $30 on the day of the event. Lunch and a 24-count pack of chalk are included in the registration fee. The public is invited to view the artists at work free of charge.
Chalk artists may check in and start working beginning at 7 a.m. on July 6. Art enthusiasts and curious bystanders may watch the art take shape from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and enjoy food from local food trucks. Prizes, including a $500 prize for the best overall entry, will be awarded at 3 p.m.
