Errant firework injures 4 spectators

CEDAR CITY — Four people were injured when an errant shell went into the crowd during the fireworks show at the end of the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games opening ceremonies Friday night, authorities said.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., just as the fireworks show was ending.

The firework reportedly landed near a group of spectators who were watching the show from a grassy area just outside Southern Utah University’s Eccles Coliseum.

SUU spokesperson Nikki Koontz said in an emailed statement that four people were reported injured. The injured individuals were treated by medical staff on scene, after which three of them were transported to Cedar City Hospital via a private vehicle.

“At this time the extent of the injuries are unknown,” Koontz said, adding that an investigation is underway.
