ST. GEORGE — If you love photography, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from an award-winning photographer during an artist reception in Springdale.

The Zion Canyon Arts & Humanities Council will host an artist reception for photographer Shirley Smith on June 13 from 5-6 p.m., at the Canyon Community Center in Springdale, where some of her photography is currently exhibited. Following the reception, Smith will give a presentation on composition, perspective and light titled “Tips for Better Photos (No Matter What Camera You Have).”

Mother Nature is the true artist,” Smith said in a press release from the council. “All I can do is capture Her beauty with my camera in person and in my studio.”

According to the press release, Smith embraced the study and hobby of photography in 2012 with encouragement from her husband, Bruce, and she has not looked back to “life before camera.” She uses her digital camera to capture and the computer to enhance moments in time around our beautiful country. Her expertise in digital photography allows her to share those moments and feelings with viewers.

Smith is a nationally known photographer currently shooting with a Nikon D800e and a Nikon D500 for hiking, plus various lenses.

Besides having her work on display at the Arrowhead Gallery in St. George, she has exhibited at the Mesquite Fine Art Gallery in Nevada, Rochester Contemporary Art Center in New York, Dixie State University, Red Cliffs Gallery, St George Art Museum and various venues in Michigan. In summer 2017, Shirley had a solo show at Dixie State in the Grand Foyer of the Eccles Center.

She is the president of the Color Country Camera Club in St. George and an active member of the Southern Utah Artists Guild and Virgin Valley Artists Association. Her current work is on display at the Arrowhead Gallery in downtown St George. Her alcohol ink functional tiles are available at the Datura Gallery in the Kayenta Art Village in Ivins.

Shirley’s photography will be on display from June 4 to July 15. The gallery show is in the Canyon Community Center located at 126 Lion Blvd. in Springdale. To learn more about this gallery show, you can visit the Z-Arts website.
