At 6:30 a.m. officers and emergency responders were dispatched to Gunlock Road on report of a single-vehicle rollover involving a black Nissan Altima, Dammeron Valley Fire Chief Kevin Dye told St. George News.

Responders found the Nissan several feet from the roadway, and the driver who was able to exit the vehicle on his own. The driver told responders he was uninjured in the crash, which was “surprising,” Dye said, considering that “every airbag in that vehicle had gone off.”

According to a witness, “it looked like a curtain of airbags” inside of the Nissan.

The driver was checked by emergency medical personnel at the scene and declined transport to the hospital.

“I couldn’t believe the guy was standing there talking to us by looking at his car,” Dye said. “I mean that thing was destroyed.”

At the time of the crash, the Nissan was heading north on Gunlock Road when it began to veer to the right, at which point the driver overcorrected to the left, sending the car careening across both lanes of travel before it continued past the soft shoulder and rolled. The vehicle came to rest several yards from the southbound shoulder facing north.

The Nissan was later towed from the roadway, and the driver was cited for failure to maintain lane of travel.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Dammeron Valley Fire and Rescue and Veyo Fire responded and tended to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
