Man Sculpting: Conquer dentophobia with Sheldon and keep your pearly whites

FEATURE — St. George News videographer and host of “Man Sculpting” Sheldon Demke has never been a fan of going to the dentist. He’s not alone. Whether it is the painful prodding with needles, someone’s fingers rummaging around in your mouth or screeching drills that sound like nails on a chalkboard, for many people, dental visits are just downright uncomfortable.

In this episode of “Man Sculpting,” Sheldon faces the challenge head on, visiting with the staff of Common Sense Family Dentistry and getting his own checkup to find out what kind of damage he has been inflicting on his mouth.

While Sheldon said he just finds trips to the dentist to be “frustrating,” for a few unfortunate souls who suffer from dentophobia, a visit to the dentist can totally freak them out and cause so much anxiety that they would rather suffer in pain than seek treatment.

This anxiety is actually a common problem worldwide, with 5% to 15% of people reporting being severely afraid and 3% who will avoid making appointments at the dentist altogether. Not surprising, many of these people have many health and even emotional problems as a result.

One of the top complaints many people have is an uncontrollable fear of needles and the pain caused by the initial injection of anesthesia before a procedure begins. However, the goal of Southern Utah dentist Dr. Scott Stucki and his friendly team of dental technicians is to make everything as painless as possible, and they are continually seeking out the latest technology to help their patients be comfortable.

“It’s come a long way since I’ve been to the dentist,” Demke said, adding that now when they give you a shot you don’t even feel it.

“It’s pretty amazing.”
