A few minutes after midnight, a witness called 911 reporting a rollover near 750 West Red Hills Parkway involving a white Toyota Prius with an unconscious driver inside of the vehicle.

Police and emergency crews arrived to find the Prius crashed  in the eastbound lane of Red Hills with the 49-year-old driver unconscious and unresponsive, St. George Police Officer Tiffany Atkin said.

The man was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance in “very critical condition.” The first witness on scene saw a tire rolling down the road and smelled a strong odor of gasoline prior to arriving.

Two other vehicles that also stopped to render aid, Reno Hughes told St. George News.

Hughes and his wife pulled over when they came upon the crash, he said, before his wife and another motorist, both who reportedly had medical training, approached the car and rendered aid to the driver until help arrived.

“The emergency personnel showed up quick,” Hughes said. “In maybe three minutes tops.”

Both eastbound lanes of Red Hills Parkway were closed and an accident reconstruction team was called out to investigate the cause of the crash.

Preliminary findings revealed the driver was heading west “at a high rate of speed,” Atkin said, when the car veered to the left and struck the raised median.

The Prius continued over the median and rolled “multiple, multiple times,” Atkin said, until it came to rest upright, leaving a debris field stretching several hundred yards.

“It was one of the worst accidents I’ve ever driven up on,” Hughes said.

The driver was properly restrained at the time of the crash. All air bags were deployed. The vehicle was heavily damaged and towed from the roadway.

The driver remains in the hospital in critical condition as of 5:30 a.m., Atkin said.

The eastbound side of Red Hills remained closed for more than five hours while westbound traffic was reduced to a single lane for just under two hours.

Atkin said the crash remains under investigation at this time.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
