ST. GEORGE — A semitractor truck pulling an enclosed trailer lost control, struck a guardrail and tipped over onto the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 15 Monday morning, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. at mile marker 35.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers at the scene said both occupants of the truck were able to climb out of the passenger side door of the mangled cab. Both the driver and passenger were examined by medical personnel, but no injuries were reported.

UHP trooper Jim Jessop said the driver reported having a tire blowout at the time of the crash, but that detail was still under investigation. It was, however, raining at the time.

There was standing water on the road, Jessop said, adding that the driver may be issued a citation for traveling too fast for conditions, pending further investigation.

No other vehicles were involved. The trailer was empty at the time of the crash, UHP said.

The semitractor-trailer, which struck boulders and terrain after hitting the guardrail, was heavily damaged in the crash. It needed to be towed from the scene. Because the wreckage went off the side of the road, there was minimal impact to southbound traffic on I-15. A Washington County Sheriff’s deputy and a Utah Department of Transportation incident manager also responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
