OGDEN — The Dixie Flyers remain in contention in the 4A baseball playoffs, thanks to a 4-0 win over Lehi Thursday afternoon in the state tournament’s one-loss bracket.

Playing under gloomy skies at Ogden’s Lindquist Field, the Flyers earned their first run in the third inning, then added three more in the final two innings to send the Pioneers packing.

Starting pitcher Brenden Blanchard went the distance on the mound for Dixie, allowing just three hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out six.

Offensively, the Flyers were paced by shortstop Kayler Yates, who went 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run and a triple. After tripling in the third inning, Yates scored Dixie’s first run on teammate Cooper Vest’s RBI single. Yates led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to put Dixie up 3-0. Vest and Reggie Graff also finished with two hits apiece.

Dixie’s next opponent in the elimination bracket will be Spanish Fork, who made it past Bear River 7-4 on Thursday. The Dixie vs. Spanish Fork game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, but it was unable to be started at that time due to rain and lightning delays. The game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Friday instead. Spanish Fork is Region 10’s No. 1 seed. The Don’s lone tournament loss came on Wednesday to Desert Hills by a score of 5-2.

Meanwhile, Desert Hills will play Salem Hills, the tournament’s only other undefeated team, Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship game and the loser dropping into the one-loss bracket to face the winner of the Spanish Fork vs. Dixie game.
