ST. GEORGE — A Southern Utah 18-and-under lacrosse team won the Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association 2019 Division 2 Championship on May 11.

The Silverbacks Varsity Lacrosse team is the first boy’s lacrosse team from Southern Utah in the Nevada league to win the division title and go to the state championship. The team defeated Green Valley in overtime with a sudden death shootout that ended the match 12-11.

Green Valley took the lead in the first quarter, coming out on top 3-1 before the Silverbacks rallied and took a one-point lead to end the second quarter 6-5. The two teams battled in the third quarter until Green Valley stepped out in front to end the third quarter 9-8. The teams ended the final quarter tied 11-11, setting up the sudden death shootout.

Brevin White scored the winning goal.

“It was a pretty exciting game,” head coach Bradley Hall said. “It was a nail-biter.”

Gage Hall was the Silverbacks’ leading scorer with 13 shots and six of the team’s 12 goals. White was the second highest scorer with 14 shots and three goals.

Coach Hall said going into the state championship he wants his team to stay determined and remain focused on the game. He said it’s “a mental game,” and wants his players to continue to “play symbiotically.”

“We’re looking for the guys to bring a lot of heart,” he said.

Before the 2019-2020 season, lacrosse was an unsanctioned sport in Southern Utah although the Utah High School Athletic Association sanctioned the sport, in 2017, making lacrosse the 11th sanctioned high school sport for boys and girls.

Hall said he and his fellow coaches and parents have been writing to and petitioning the schools and trying to come up with a team. He said all of the paperwork has been filled out and his goal is to have a lacrosse club in each of the Southern Utah schools. Southern Utah Lacrosse has opened sign-ups and is accepting players and coaches for the season.

“If everything goes well this weekend, we’ll have a great legacy to start off with,” Hall said.

In 2017, a varsity girls lacrosse team from the SULAX won the division title for SNLA and the Nevada state title.

The Silverbacks head to Reno, Nevada, to play for the state championship title on Saturday; as the SNLA champions, the team will play the High Sierra Lacrosse League champion, which has not been announced at this time.
