Young golfers kick off summer JAG program with support of local Elks Lodge

ST. GEORGE — More than 200 young golfers turned out Saturday for St. George City’s Junior Association of Golfers kickoff event at Southgate Golf Club.

About 20 volunteers from the Dixie Elks Lodge 1743 helped conduct a “skills challenge” event, where the youth tried their hand at putting, chipping, pitching and distance driving.

The lodge members also helped serve a lunch of hot dogs, chips and cookies to the participants.

There were 237 registered golfers between the ages of 6-16 who attended the event, according to Bob Matteson, public relations officer for the Elks Lodge.

Matteson said the event and others like it help fulfill the lodge’s two-fold goal of helping the youth of the community succeed and keeping its members, many of whom are older citizens and veterans, involved in community service.

“We like to take care of our future leaders, and activities like this help us show that support,” Matteson said, calling the event “a great success.”

The main focus of the JAG program is to introduce golf to beginning juniors by teaching them etiquette and swing fundamentals that will make golf enjoyable for years to come.

Enrollment in program, which is open to girls and boys between the ages of 7 and 17, costs $40 per child. Registration may be done online or in person at the St. George Recreation Center, 285 S. 400 East, St. George, or at the St. George City Leisure Services office at 220 N. 200 East, St. George. Registration ends on June 7.
