ST. GEORGE — Police say that rescue crews were called to the Man O War Bridge after witnesses heard a woman screaming from the Virgin River on Tuesday.

With the intent of enjoying the water, a 29-year-old woman gathered her raft and headed to the river, starting her expedition just north of the Man O War Bridge. After setting her raft in the water and climbing on, the woman forgot to plant her feet and the river’s current carried her away, according to police.

The St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and Volunteers in Public Safety unit arrived at the Man O War Bridge just before 8 p.m.

First responders and witnesses said an unknown man rescued the woman from the water where first responders were waiting just south of the bridge.

The woman’s family and witnesses of the incident gathered in the Bloomington Park parking lot with first responders.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
