ST. GEORGE — A driver who police say may have experienced a medical problem caused a chain-reaction collision involving six other vehicles in the Costco parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. as the driver of a gray GMC Canyon pickup truck was pulling out to leave a parking space, witnesses and investigators said at the scene. Costco is located at 835 N. 3050 East, St. George.

“It appears that an elderly gentleman had a medical episode, lost control of his vehicle in the parking lot and struck several vehicles before coming to rest,” St. George Police officer Andy Mickelson told St. George News.

Other than the GMC Canyon pickup, six vehicles were damaged, Mickelson said, adding that all of them were parked and unoccupied at the time of the incident.

“There were couple of witnesses that witnessed the crash but were not directly involved,” he said.

The driver was transported via ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center.

“I don’t know his condition,” Mickelson said. “I’ve been getting everybody’s information and some photographs. I’m going to try to talk to the driver of the vehicle that caused the mess.”

The GMC Canyon pickup sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The damage to the other six vehicles ranged from minor to serious, with a couple of them also needing to be towed and the rest appearing to still be driveable.

Traffic in the already-busy parking lot was impacted for an hour or more while St. George Police officers, St. George Fire Department personnel and tow truck operators worked to clear the scene.
