Thomas Anison Smyly

Thomas Anison Smyly, son of Marvin and Zona Ruth Tannehill Smyly, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Jan. 24, 2019. He was born in Uniontown, Alabama, but grew up on a farm in Axis, Alabama.

At the age of 8, he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served his heavenly Father the remainder of his life.

Thomas was a veteran of the Korean War and was in battle on the front lines when the armistice was signed.

He married Pauline Arbie Harper April 9, 1955, and they were later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. Together they have two sons: Thomas Jr. and Joseph.

Thomas’ profession was working as an aerospace engineer with the emphasis on stress and structure analysis. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in engineering from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Texas Christian University.

He is survived by his wife Pauline; sons Thomas Jr. and Joseph (Elizabeth); two grandchildren: Sarah Smyly and Nathan Smyly; two great-grandchildren: Emma and Ethan Cunningham; brothers Mack (Joyce), James, Peyton (Margaret), David (Elaine), and Daniel; sister Kathy; half-brother Jeffery; and stepmother Luci Smyly. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Smyly; sister Jean Kaura; and daughters-in-law Janice Smyly and Jennifer Smyly.

Funeral services

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.
  • A visitation will be held Saturday prior to services at 10 a.m. at the mortuary.
  • Interment will be in Tonaquint Cemetery.
