ST. GEORGE — The Pine View Panthers held on down the stretch Wednesday against visiting Canyon View to maintain their perfect record in Region 9 play. Meanwhile, Dixie edged Hurricane, and Desert Hills held winless Snow Canyon at bay, as both teams fell in line just one game behind Pine View.
Dixie 47, Hurricane 46
At Hurricane, the Dixie Flyers hit the go-ahead basket with 7 seconds remaining, giving the Flyers a 47-46 win.
Behind 37-30 at the start of the final quarter, Hurricane rallied to get back in the game. The two teams battled back and forth during the fourth quarter, with Hurricane taking a 46-43 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
With just under one minute left, Dixie’s Jordan Mathews scored inside to bring the Flyers within one point, 46-45.
Hurricane turned the ball over on its next possession due to a double-dribble violation.
Taking over with 37 seconds left, Dixie ran off 30 seconds before Hayden Cottle drove to the right side of the basket and banked in a layup, putting Dixie ahead 47-46.
Hurricane had a chance to set up a potential game-winning shot. The Tigers were able to get the ball to Dax Dayley, who’d hit two 3-pointers during Hurricane’s third-quarter rally.
As the final seconds ticked down, Dayley managed to get a shot off over two Dixie defenders, but the attempt hit the front rim. Hurricane’s Luke Wright got the rebound and put it back up before the buzzer sounded, but it fell short, as Dixie escaped with the win.
Dixie had jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first quarter, then outscored the Tigers 20-11 during the second period to take a 30-17 halftime lead.
“In the first half they hit a lot of threes and we just didn’t get out on the shooters,” said Hurricane head coach Todd Langston. “And then in the second half, we changed up our defenses. We switched to a zone defense and did a good job with that against them and got ourselves back in the game.”
Hurricane outscored the Flyers 29-17 in the second half.
“A couple of calls here and just a missed shot here or there … we had a chance to win it at the end. If those go in, it’s great. If they don’t, then we’re feeling the way we feel right now,” Langston added. “Credit to Dixie, they came over, had a good game plan, were very well coached and then they did a great job.”
Sophomore guard Isaac Finlinson scored 12 points to lead the Flyers in scoring, while senior guard Nic Roundy added 11. Also for Dixie, junior Tevan Shaffer added nine points on three 3-pointers.
Hurricane was led by Bryce Thomas, who scored all 13 of his points during the fourth quarter. Bryant Mangelson added 11 points for the Tigers.
Hurricane played the game without its leading rebounder, 6-4 senior center Dom Scott.
“He averages 10 or 11 rebounds a game for us and we missed him tonight,” Langford said.
Hurricane’s next game is at Pine View at 7 p.m. Friday, while Dixie hosts Desert Hills that same evening.

Desert Hills 63, Snow Canyon 56
The Desert Hills Thunder defeated the Snow Canyon Warriors 63-56, improving to 3-1 in region play.
The Thunder were in front the entire game, leading by 10 after one quarter and taking a 12-point lead into halftime.
While the second half was closer, Desert Hills was able to pull away and seal the victory.
The Thunder featured a well-balanced offense with nine players scoring a basket. Carson Thornton led the way with 14 points, while Keegan Munson and Mason Chase added 10 points apiece.
For the Warriors, Cole Warner led all scorers with 23 points. Jospeh Ahee added 10 for Snow Canyon. The loss drops the Warriors to 0-5 in region play.
Up next, Desert Hills plays at Dixie on Friday at 7 p.m.
Snow Canyon will look for their first region win when they travel to Cedar High on Friday at 7 p.m.

Pine View 60, Canyon View 53
In a close game at the Pit on Wednesday, the Pine View Panthers beat the Canyon View Falcons, improving to 4-0 in Region 9 play.
Pine View led 17-11 after one quarter, but the Falcons cut the deficit to just two points early in the second.
The Panthers then opened the game up, taking a seven-point lead into the half, with Connor Brooksby scoring six points during the stretch.
Once again, Canyon View stormed back, tying the score at 36 before Dallin Brown entered the game and provided a spark for the Panthers, scoring six straight points that gave Pine View a 44-43 lead heading into the final period.
After the Falcons took the lead early in the fourth, the Panthers responded, taking a 54-51 lead via a Brown jumper at the 2:27 mark. The Falcons responded, but Brown added another bucket to make it 56-53.
Following a missed shot by Canyon View, Jared Koller made two free throws with 7 seconds left, making the score 58-53. Michael Moore sealed the Pine View win with 4 seconds left, stealing the inbound pass and making a layup for a 60-53 win.
Dallin Brown scored 18 points for the Panthers, making 9-of-12 shots. Jared Koller added 12 points and Michael Moore chipped in 10.
With the loss, Canyon View drops to 3-2 in region play. After a bye on Friday, they will host Dixie on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Up next, Pine View will host Hurricane on Friday at 7 p.m.
