Craig Lloyd Smith

Oct. 11, 1946 – Jan. 12, 2019

Craig Lloyd Smith, of Hurricane, Utah, passed away in St. George, Utah, on Jan. 12, 2019, while completing his final act of service.

Craig was born Oct. 11, 1946, in Montpelier, Idaho, to Lloyd Milton and Phyllis Jean Bartlome Smith. He was the second of four children. Craig grew up working with his family on their dairy farm. He loved being outdoors, hunting and playing basketball.

Craig served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Florida. He drove a new car from Utah across country to Florida by himself when he went on his mission. When Craig returned from his mission he attended Brigham Young University where he was a member of the “Dirty Dozen,” a group of guys that lived together and became the best of friends.

Craig returned to Georgetown, Idaho, to work on the family dairy farm. He met his sweetheart, Barbara Eschler, at a church activity and they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on Jan. 8, 1971. Together they were blessed with five children: Christopher, Katie, Daniel, Steven and Ecko.

The family moved to St. George, Utah,  in August 1986, where Craig worked as a custodian for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He then became a truck driver and did this until he retired. In retirement, Craig was a handyman and could fix just about anything. He enjoyed building and repairing things and made many keepsakes for his grandkids. Craig loved going to garage sales and could always find a use for the treasures he found. He spent his time serving others.

Craig’s greatest love was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids hunting, hiking, camping and hunting for golf balls. The Smith family loved to go boating, especially at Lake Powell, and had many fun trips with family and friends. Sunday dinner with the family was his favorite time of the week and he cooked amazing meals for them. He was known for his Dutch oven dinners, homemade bread and chocolate cake.

Craig is survived by his sweetheart, Barbara, of Hurricane, Utah; children Christopher (Lynnette) Smith of Spanish Fork, Utah, Katie (Jason) Allsop of St. George, Utah, Daniel (Julie) Smith of St. George, Utah, Steven Smith, of St. George, Utah, Ecko (Roger) Ashmore, of Apple Valley, Utah; and 12 grandkids: Keenan, Kolby, Kavan, Kashton, Cayden, Colton, Treydan, Brecken, Austin, Marcus, Callie and Ragnar. He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws.

There will be a celebration of Craig’s life for family and friends on Saturday, Jan. 19, at noon at the LDS church at 320 N. 3400 West, Hurricane, Utah. Casual dress.

    Dear Barbara and family,
I learned about Craig’s passing from a Facebook post of Julie’s. I have been thinking all week about your family, the neighborhood as it used to be and others who I have lost touch with. I just want you to know how sorry I am about your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May you be blessed and comforted at this difficult time.
    Sincerely,
    Sue Woodland
