ST. GEORGE — And then there was one.
Pine View took it Dixie Friday in a game pitting the final two undefeated teams in Region 9.
As the season hits its stride, Canyon View held off a feisty Cedar squad to move into second place behind Pine View, while Hurricane won to end the night in a three-way tie for third with Dixie and Desert Hills, which didn’t play.
All three winners were visiting teams.
Canyon View 61, Cedar 56
At Cedar, the Canyon View Falcons withstood a late rally by the Redmen to escape with a 61-56 win over their crosstown rivals.
Down by 11 at the start of the fourth quarter, Cedar managed to pull within two points with 1:02 left in the game when freshman guard Zab Santana hit a pair of free throws to make it 53-51.
However, Canyon View managed to score six points in a row after that, thanks to a layup by Parker Holmes, later followed by four free throws by Mason Lyman, the last of which put the Falcons ahead 59-51 with 18 seconds left.
But Cedar wasn’t done yet, as Santana drained a 3-pointer, after which Cedar quickly stole the ball back, with Santana finding Gaige Savage underneath for a quick basket that made it 59-56 with about five seconds left.
The Redmen fouled Canyon View’s Jaxon Jorgenson almost immediately on the inbounds play, but Jorgenson calmly swished both free throws to ice the game.
All told, the Falcons scored 17 points during the final quarter, with 13 of them coming on free throws (they were 13-for-15). Remarkably, Cedar did even better, hitting 10-of-10 free throws in the final quarter and outscoring the Falcons 23-17 during the fourth.
Canyon View led 8-2 early on, but Cedar’s Treyton Tebbs scored on a driving layup that put the Redmen up 11-10 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Canyon View then answered with a 3-pointer from the corner and never trailed again.
The Falcons led 18-13 at the end of the first, but Santana made a jump shot to score the first basket of the second quarter and make it 18-15. Canyon View went on an 11-0 run to pull ahead 29-15. Santana added three more baskets before the first half ended with Canyon View ahead by 10 points, 31-21.
The two teams battled evenly throughout the third quarter, which ended with the Falcons leading 44-33. That set the stage for Cedar’s valiant comeback attempt.
Cedar narrowed the gap to four points with 3:13 left when center Luke Armstrong drained a pair of free throws to make it 51-47. But Holmes, who scored 8 of his team-high 18 points in the final quarter, answered with a pair of free throws on the Falcons’ next possession to bump Canyon View’s lead back up to six points.
“Parker did a great job making tough drives in the fourth and getting fouled or finishing,” Canyon View head coach Rob Potter said of Holmes.
Lyman finished with 13 points for the Falcons, while fellow guard Trevor Farrow added 16 points, including four timely 3-pointers spread through the first three quarters.
“Trevor hit some big shots in the middle quarters,” Potter added. “Also, Cody Spencer, who’d hit the game-winner in overtime in the JV game, then came and hit two big 3s early for us.”
The Falcons made a total of nine 3-pointers during the game, while Cedar made just three.
Cedar was led by Santana’s 26 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Tanner Eyre added 8 points before fouling out of the game with just under 5 minutes remaining. Tebbs finished with 7 points for Cedar, all of them during the first quarter.
“I give a lot of credit to Coach (Russ) Beck and his team; they had a great game plan and we struggled to adjust,” Potter said. “They are a good, young team and are getting better all the time.
“Defensively, we locked down in the second half but we fouled too much and needed to keep people in front of us. I was proud of our kids for finishing it out and weathering their run. We’ll be better off for winning close games like that down the stretch in Region 9.”
Canyon View next plays at Pine View on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while Cedar has a bye on Wednesday and plays its next contest Friday, Jan. 18 at home against Snow Canyon.

Hurricane 68, Snow Canyon 53
The visiting Hurricane Tigers defeated Snow Canyon 68-53.
Hurricane led by seven at the half before running away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Warriors 23-7 in the final period for the win.
The Tigers were led on offense by Dallen Davis, who scored 16 points. Matt Meyers and Domenic Scott added 12 apiece in the win, while Daxton Dayley scored 10.
With the win, Hurricane is now 2-1 in region play, and will take on Dixie on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Snow Canyon drops to 0-4 in region play. Cole Warner dropped 16 points to lead the Warriors, while Cade Guerisoli added 14 and Chance Barney chipped in 10.
Up next, Snow Canyon will play a team from Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. before trying again for their first region win on Wednesday at Desert Hills. That game will tip off at 7 p.m.

Pine View 83, Dixie 62
In a battle of unbeaten teams early in the Region 9 campaign, the Pine View Panthers came out on top, turning a close game into a blowout victory over the Dixie Flyers.
Pine View started quickly, taking a 7-0 lead before Dixie responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take their first lead of the game.
Dallin Brown entered the game for the Panthers and scored six points in the opening quarter to keep the score close. “Offensively, you can’t guard him in the high post, his first step is quick,” Panthers coach Ryan Eves said.
The game remained close throughout with neither team leading by more than seven. It was tied at 57 with 5:41 left in the game.
After the timeout, Jared Sudweeks nailed one of his seven 3-pointers in the game, putting the Panthers on top and triggering a 26-5 run and turning a close contest into a decisive victory.
“During the timeout I said ‘we need to lock down defensively’ and we did,” Eves said. “I don’t know how many stops in a row we finally got, but we couldn’t stop them in the first half and then we finally did.”
Sudweeks was one of the offensive starts for the Panthers, scoring a game-high 21 points. Brown added 19, while Jared Koller chipped in with 15. Michael Moore added 11 and Taiven Shepherd scored 10 to round out the well-balanced Panthers offensive attack.
With the loss, Dixie drops to 2-1 in region play. Nic Roundy led the Flyers with 18 points, with Hayden Cottle adding 15 and Jordan Mathews 10.
With the win, Pine View is now 3-0 to start region play, and the team has its eyes set on a Region 9 title.
“Oh yeah, that’s been the goal along,” Eves said. “We had a bit of a rocky preseason but we know what we’ve got and what it takes. We’ve just got to keep playing our game.”
Up next, the Panthers host Canyon View on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Dixie looks to bounce back at Hurricane on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
