ST. GEORGE — Three men are facing drug charges following an investigation prompted by bad driving on the Arizona Strip, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 3:45 p.m. Friday, sheriff’s deputies came across a silver SUV that was southbound on the Mt. Trumbull Loop.
“(They) observed the vehicle traveling outside its lane and crossing into the wrong side of the roadway,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release issued Monday.
Attempts to make a traffic stop were unsuccessful as the SUV continued on until the driver pulled off the road and stopped next to a travel trailer on Arizona Trust Land.
Deputies made contact with two men in the SUV, identified as 48-year-old Eric Bruce Cheney, of St. George, and 36-year-old Robert Dale Morland, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
There was an opened liquor bottle on the passenger floor board in front of Morland, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Cheney, who was the driver, reportedly told deputies he had no wallet on him and that his license was suspended.
An ounce of methamphetamine and two glass pipes were found in a subsequent search of the SUV, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“A search of Cheney’s phone indicated it was being used to arrange the sale of drugs,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Both men denied possession of the methamphetamine.”
While the SUV was being searched, a third man, identified as 43-year-old Guillaume Bruce Aguerre, of St. George, walked out of the trailer. Deputies who told him about the drugs allegedly found in the SUV and asked to search the trailer.
Aguerre refused to let them search the trailer, but a K-9 officer sniffing for drugs in the area indicated there was a possible sign of narcotics inside the trailer, and it was searched once a warrant was obtained.
“Drug paraphernalia was located inside the trailer and it was learned that Aguerre did not have a permit to camp on Arizona Trust Land,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
Cheney and Morland were arrested and face felonies charges of dangerous drug possession, dangerous drug possession for sale and drug paraphernalia possession. Morland also had two warrants issued for his arrest at the time. Aguerre was arrested for felony drug paraphernalia possession and misdemeanor criminal trespassing.
The three men were taken into custody and booked into Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
