ST. GEORGE — A fire that started in a St. George church Saturday night was quickly extinguished by responding firemen.
At about 9:30 p.m., two fire engine crews from the St. George Fire Department were dispatched to the Grace Episcopal Church at 1072 E. 900 South on a fire alarm activation, Fire Chief Robert Stoker said.
Police who arrived first at the scene told 911 dispatchers that flames could be seen inside of the building. The officers then cordoned off the area to direct traffic away from the church.
Arriving fire crews entered the church to find the pulpit and podium located in the sanctuary of the chapel ablaze. They were able to extinguish the fire quickly, Stoker said, adding that large ventilation fans were set up to clear the building of heavy smoke that accumulated from the fire.
Stoker said there was smoke damage throughout the building, and the fire caused approximately $2,000-4,000 in damage to the pulpit, podium and wood flooring.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
This report is based on statements from emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
