ST. GEORGE — Halfway through pool play as of Thursday night, St. George area teams are a collective 1-4 in pool play during the American Legion Summer Classic baseball tournament.

Nevada 5, St. George 3

St. George 10, Mountain Range, Colorado 7

The St. George Sentinels lost 5-3 to the Nevada Jays Wednesday night as the four-day tournament got under way. However, the Sentinels rebounded to defeat Mountain Range, Colorado, Thursday night at Pine View High, by a score of 10-7.

Sentinels head coach Shane Johanson said Cody Riddle pitched six strong innings and gave up only one earned run against Mountain Range.

Mountain Range loaded the bases with no out in the seventh inning with St. George holding a 10-6 lead, but reliever Cody Longman came in for Riddle and picked up the save.

St. George had built an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to home runs by Weston Sampson and Cannon Secrist.

The Sentinels (1-1 in pool play) next face Springville Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Pine View High.

Westlake 11, Dixie 10

Boise 11, Dixie 7

Dixie’s American Legion squad, which comprises mostly younger players from the Dixie Flyers high school team, suffered two narrow defeats Thursday.

Thursday morning at Dixie State University, Dixie had jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Westlake, and later led 9-0 before the Thunder started to come back into the game.

“We couldn’t throw strikes or field the ball late in the game against Westlake,” said Dixie coach Danny Ipson, who added his team went through a similar scenario later Thursday evening against Boise at Dixie High School.

“We were ahead 7-5 over Boise going into the seventh inning, and had a little of the same issue. We had a chance to close them out and missed on a play or two.”

Boise went on to score six runs in the seventh inning and win by four.

Highlights for Dixie included a solo homer by Blake Oaks, a three-run triple by Cooper Vest, and a two-run double by Brenden Blanchard.

Dixie (now 0-2 in pool play) will play its third and final pool game at 8:30 p.m. Friday vs. Caldwell, Idaho, at Dixie High.

Jackson, Wyoming 9, Snow Canyon 3

Snow Canyon lost to Jackson, Wyoming, 9-3, in the late game Thursday at Snow Canyon High. The Warriors have two more pool games Friday: against Pocatello, Idaho, in the morning and against Boise, Idaho, at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, the tournament’s 16 teams will be seeded and paired off according to how many games they won in pool play, with any ties being broken by head-to-head competition, then by runs allowed and runs scored. After each of the teams plays once more on Saturday (eight games total), the two winners of the No. 1 seeded games will face each other in the tournament championship game at 8:30 p.m. at DSU.
