Car veers off I-15, slides 35 feet down into ravine

ST. GEORGE — A car slid off the road 35 feet down a ravine in the Virgin River Gorge on southbound Interstate 15 in Arizona Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. MST, about seven miles south of the Utah border near mile marker 25.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Bottoms  said the driver of a silver Honda CRV was a 64-year-old woman from Kanab on her way to Las Vegas.

She was traveling in the right-hand lane at approximately 65 miles per hour when she became dizzy and accidentally drove off the road and on the wrong side of the guardrail. She drove along the narrow dirt section between the guardrail and a ravine when her car started to slip in the dirt. She steered left, attempting to re-enter the freeway, but hit the guardrail, which sent her down the hill into the ravine.

The woman was traveling alone, and a family that was traveling behind her witnessed the accident and stopped to render aid. They removed her from the vehicle and brought her out of the ravine, to the top of the hill.

Arizona Highway Patrol, fire units from the St. George Fire Department, fire units and an ambulance from the Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire District responded to the scene.

The driver received minor injuries and was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for treatment of abrasions and lacerations. She will also be examined to make sure her dizzy spell is not a more serious health issue.

The woman was wearing a seat belt and probably will not receive any citations, according to police.

St. George Fire Department going out there because they are bored with absolutely nothing to do. Need to find them something productive to do while they’re waiting for a fire to start. Coloring books maybe?

It could be that they would have the most rapid response time and the driver’s life is more important than playing, as you put it.
