ST. GEORGE — A power failure early Sunday morning left a wide swath of the west side of St. George without power, including residences, businesses, restaurants and hotels.
At 6:35 a.m. the area east of South Bluff Street to approximately Main Street lost power. The Kmart shopping center, hotels on South Bluff Street and 24-hour restaurants such as McDonalds, Burger King and Black Bear Diner were among those affected.
The west side of Bluff Street, however, seemed unaffected by the outage.
Equipment failure
Assistant to the City Manager Marc Mortensen said there was equipment failure at the Flood Street substation at the south end of 400 East. Crews were dispatched and were on the repair job in 10 minutes.
“There were two pieces of equipment that needed to be replaced that failed,” Mortensen said. “One was called an arrester and the second piece of equipment was called a post insulator. Both pieces failed this morning; we don’t know why, they just do.”
Mortensen said 2,100 customers were affected by the outage.
Traffic lights were out in the area as well. It was early in the morning and no traffic tie-ups or accidents were reported.
Power restored
Power was restored just before 8 a.m., Mortensen said, adding that there is still some work that needs to be completed at the Flood Street Substation. Affected customers have been back-fed from another substation to maintain uninterrupted service until crews can complete the job on Monday.
Reminders for driving in an area where traffic signals are not working: Treat the intersection like a four-way stop sign. Don’t simply blow through the nonworking signal. Treat all intersections with caution during a power outage.
