Boys basketball: Snow Canyon faces challenges of new coach, lack of experience

ST. GEORGE – There are three new head coaches in Region 9 this year. While the newcomers taking over in Cedar and Pine View have vast experience returning, Coach Jamison Sorenson took over a Snow Canyon program that left the proverbial cupboard bare. No starters and very little experience returns. But Sorenson was not fazed at media day earlier this week.

Backcourt: Directing the Warrior attack will be point guard Christian Sullivan. He will be joined in the backcourt by Braden Baker and Kameron Webster. Landon Labrum will also see significant action.

Frontcourt: In the post will be Tyson Deland and Bryson Childs. Sophomore Joey Robertson will also factor in, as well as Kameron Webster’s older brother, Britton, who should also see significant time.

Expectations around the region are low for the Warriors. They were picked to finish sixth in Region 9 by the coaches and media. A benefit that accompanies lack of experience and a new coaching staff is that opponents have little to go on early in the season in preparing for Snow Canyon.

“I think we will surprise a lot of teams, especially early,” said Sorenson. “We will run a West Coast attack on offense. We are quick up and down our lineup.”

Last year, the Warriors eked into the playoffs with a 9-14 overall record and a 4-6 record in region play. Then they upset Region 10’s No. 1-seed Union in the first round before bowing out.

The Warriors begin their season playing four games in consecutive nights beginning tonight by hosting Enterprise. They will then travel to Bear River and play North Sanpete, South Summitt and host Bear River in the Bear River tournament. They will end December by playing in the Walker Classic at Dixie State and the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic in Cedar.
