Margie Kathleen McCary Walker

January 15, 1940 — November 3, 2016

walkermargie-obitMargie Kathleen McCary Walker passed away peacefully on Nov. 3, 2016.

Born to L. Alma (Ray) and John S. McCary on Jan. 15, 1940, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Margie Kathleen (“Kathy”) was the youngest of five children. Her parents provided a loving and deeply religious home, often reading scriptures together or silently praying over the Bible that sat open on a pedestal by the front door. Kathy sang in her church choir as a young girl.

Kathy grew into an outgoing and very beautiful young woman. At age 23, she met a handsome airman named Bert Noxon Walker at the Air Force officer’s club in Montgomery. He waited patiently until she stepped away from her friends, and said: “You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.” To which she replied, “I think your cigar stinks,” and walked away. Luckily for us, Bert persisted. The two were married on Aug. 8, 1964, six weeks after meeting.

Air Force travels took Kathy and Bert to several of the United States, Bolivia, and Panama. During this time in their lives, Kathy gave birth to two boys – Curtis and Cary. The Walker family eventually settled in Waupaca, Wisconsin, where they owned and operated Walker’s Barn Antiques for thirty years, and raised their sons.  Kathy earned a bachelor degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1989. She loved traveling abroad with Bert – particularly to Spain, Portugal, & Russia. The couple moved to St. George, Utah, in 2012 in order to spend time with their granddaughters, and escape mid-Western winters.

Kathy’s beauty and southern charm captivated all who met her. She had an artistic spirit, and a flair for design, making every home she lived in look like something out of home décor magazines. Many people refer to her as their “second mom” or “dear friend”, which speaks to how special she made people feel.

Kathy is preceded in death by John Edward (brother), Louise (sister) and Rudy (brother-in-law), Ruthie (sister) and Newt (brother-in-law), and Jill (niece).

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Bert Walker; sister, Mary Magdalene McCary of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; son, Curtis Bert (Janet) of Dammeron Valley, Utah; son, Cary (Amy) of Oregon, Wisconsin; and four wonderful grandchildren – Jonah, Nika, Savannah, and Alexa. She is mourned deeply by family and many dear friends across the country.

We are all very thankful for the loving support she received throughout her illness, particularly from the caretakers at Suntree Hospice, Home Instead, Liberty Dialysis, and The Meadows. “I enjoyed my time in St. George. It’s a lovely city and the people are so very kind. I have been blessed by being here during my illness. Thank you.” – Margie Kathleen Walker
