ST. GEORGE — A Colorado City child was injured after being run over by a piece of construction equipment Saturday evening.
Fire Chief Kevin Barlow of Hildale/Colorado City Fire and Rescue said emergency personnel were dispatched just after 5 p.m. to an accident near North Homestead Street in Colorado City involving a 6-year-old boy.
As soon as firefighters and EMTs arrived the child was stabilized and then quickly transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, he said.
Witnesses at the scene told officers that during an excavation project at a residence the boy was walking near the skid-steer loader that was in use and somehow either lost his footing or was pulled to the ground before he was run over.
The child showed signs of external injuries consistent with the accident, however Barlow said internal injuries are also possible.
“One wheel ran over the entire length of the left side of his body,” the chief said, “and we were very concerned that the boy may have sustained internal injuries.”
EMTs treated the child as a trauma patient and every precaution was taken as EMTs were treating him at the scene and during transport to avoid further injury.
“We have very limited information at this time,” Barlow said. “I only know that he is at the hospital and we have not been updated on the child’s condition.”
Hildale/Colorado City Fire and Rescue and the Colorado City Marshal’s Office responded to the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
