ST. GEORGE – A brush fire that ignited in a field on the west side of Westridge Drive Wednesday night was short-lived once firefighters arrived.
The St. George Fire Department received a report of a fire in the field located at the southwest corner of Westridge Drive and Sunset Boulevard at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Initial reports placed the fire near homes, St. George Fire Battalion Chief Darren Imlay said, adding that flames were reaching up to 15 feet.
The patch of fire was actually about 30 feet by 30 feet, Imlay said, and was put out in short order thanks to cooler temperatures and a lack of wind to spread the flames.
“Summertime with winds, that’s a whole different fire,” he said.
As to a possible cause of the fire, Imlay said it occurred near an area where people tend to camp out in the field.
“Potentially some campfire or smoking, we don’t know for sure,” he said. “It’s close to where people were staying.”
No damage or injuries were reported in connection to the fire.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
