Louise Zeenati reported the fire to the St. George Communications Center at approximately 6 p.m.

“I was on Main Street walking up toward the Brandin’ Iron (Steakhouse) and just happened to turn my head,” Zeenati said. “It wasn’t much more than chimney smoke, you know? But within a few seconds you could see that it was more than a chimney flame.”

In addition to Zeenati’s report, other people reported explosions, Washington County Sheriff’s Lt. Dave Crouse said.

“At this point it’s suspected to be a propane tank involved with the primary residence,” Crouse said.

The attempts to put out the fire was hindered by efforts to keep it from spreading. Flames from the home ignited brush and several trees around the residence, diverting the attention of the firefighters as they tried to avoid the house fire turning into a forest fire.

Crouse said there were no injuries, as the residents were away from the home when it went up. However, Zeenati said the owners of the home were full-time residents of the community.

“I think they live here full-time,” Zeenati said. “I’m sure it’s got everything they have.”

“What a mess,” she continued. “It just took a matter of minutes and that whole thing was just …” Zeenati’s voice trailed off.

Firefighters declared the structure fire contained at approximately 7:30 p.m. Crouse verified that the residence was a total loss.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Pine Valley, Central and Brookside fire departments responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
