William James Forbes passed away Sept. 9. He was born on April 30, 1939, in Cedar City, Utah, to William J. and Ramona Bryant Forbes. He grew up in Banning, California, and then moved to St. George, Utah, where he graduated from Dixie High School and enlisted in the National Guard, Unit 222 Triple Deuce. He married Anna Laura Heaton and became a loving father to Ron, Doug and Darlene (Milne) and they had two children together: Tony and LauraAnn (Forbes).
He dedicated his life to the military, completing Officer Candidate School and serving in the 1st Infantry Artillery Division of the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Ft. Lewis, Washington; Salt Lake City, Utah; Ft. Riley, Kansas; and Schweinfurt, Germany. He served two separate tours of duty in Vietnam as part of the Big Red One.
He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service.
He retired as a Major in the Field Artillery, returning to St. George in 1979 to work with his brother Raymond at Forbes Welding. He was a gifted man of many talents. He was creative, good at design/development, and there was simply nothing he could not fix.
- Graveside services will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Cedar City Cemetery at 2 p.m.
