OGDEN — Matt Kitchen threw four touchdown passes and Chris Poulsen rushed for 120 yards as Snow Canyon blasted Ogden 48-20 Friday night in northern Utah.
The Warriors rolled up 496 yards of offense, averaging nearly nine yards per play, and built a 41-7 halftime lead. The clock ticked nearly continuously in the mercy-rule shortened second half and plenty of reserves got to see playing time for Snow Canyon.
“We jumped on them pretty fast,” SC coach Mike Esplin said. “Our guys were ready to go and really played well when it was still a game. We had a letdown later in the game, but when it was still meaningful, we were on it. Our offensive line was dominant. They’ve come a long way already this season.”
Kitchen, making his first start since a knee injury in Week 1, sparked a quick start for the visiting Warriors. He opened the game by engineering a long drive and then finishing it off with a 29-yard scoring pass to Tyson Deland.
That was the first of four scores in the first quarter alone for SC. Kitchen passed to Zack Nowatzke for 56 yards on the next SC possession, then Kolten Barber got into the act with a 46-yard field goal that made it 17-0 with 2:37 left in the first.
Poulsen ripped off a 60-yard TD run on the next SC offensive set, pushing the advantage to 24-0 with 38 seconds left in the first.
After an Ogden score, Barber hit another field goal, then Kitchen hit on TD strikes of 23 yards to Deland and 29 yards to Andy Day to give the Warriors that 41-7 advantage at intermission.
Britton Webster, who led the defense with seven tackles and an interception, also ran for 61 yards in the game, including SC’s only TD of the second half on a 2-yard dive.
The Warriors, 2-2, have now won two straight games heading into the region-opener at Hurricane next Friday.
“We’re still inconsistent at some things, especially on defense tonight,” Esplin said. “But they are things I’ve seen us do right, so we just need to keep repping them and not make mistakes.”
SC gained 496 yards in the game, but also surrendered 360 to the winless Tigers.
