Girls volleyball: Dixie, Snow Canyon open season with road wins

ST. GEORGE – Two Region 9 teams, Dixie and Snow Canyon, opened their seasons on the road tonight with success. Hurricane dropped to 0-2 with their home opener in a five-set battle with Panguitch. Below are the game summaries:

Dixie 3, Richfield 1

The Lady Flyers squeaked this one out in a closely contested battle with the Wildcats, winning 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21. Tyler Stilson led Dixie with eight kills. Shawnee Jones and Risha Tiatia contributed with seven and six kills, respectively. Grace Brown recorded a 2.4 passing ratio.

“Our kids fought hard,” said Dixie head coach Stacy Leavitt. “It was good to start with Richfield. They are strong at the net. Our hitters and setters had to work for every point. Our setters did a great job leading the team. We also served well as a team.”

Dixie begins the season 1-0 and will play North Sanpete at home on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Snow Canyon 3, Kanab 2

The Lady Warriors opened their 2016 campaign with a five-set victory against Kanab on the road. Down two sets to one, Snow Canyon clawed back to take the final two sets for the win, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12. Sammi Johnston led the team with 13 kills and 16 digs. Ally Dunston recorded nine kills and eight digs. Setter Camryn Johnson had 25 assists and 13 digs. Snow Canyon is 1-0 and will play next Thursday at Union. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Panguitch 3, Hurricane 2

The Lady Tigers had their home-opener ruined by visiting Panguitch. The match went the full five sets, 25-21, 20-25, 25-9, 20-25, 15-10. In the final set, Hurricane stayed with the visitors to 10 before Panguitch finished the match with a 5-0 run.

Jeanette Cram led the team with six kills. Kansas Lytle and Sierra Davis recorded five kills apiece. Hollie Isom played well defensively with 22 digs. Jaiden Smith led the team with four blocks.

“It was a well-played match,” said Hurricane head coach Content Marshall. “I was pleased with how we played tonight. Our setters, Hailey Homer and Sierra Davis, played extremely well.”

Hurricane falls to 0-2 on the young season. The Lady Tigers will travel to Kanab on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tuesday’s game
Canyon View 3, Hurricane 0

The Lady Tigers opened up the volleyball season for Region 9 with a tough loss on the road to Canyon View, 25-15, 25-23, 25-19. Cram and Lytle recorded eight and six kills, respectively. Davis served well, recording four aces.

“Canyon View is a strong program,” Marshall said. “We played better as the match progressed. Hollie Isom had a good game defensively.”
