ST. GEORGE — A collision between a minivan and a truck on Bluff Street caused significant damage to both vehicles and slowed traffic to a crawl Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., police and emergency personnel responded to reports of a collision between two vehicles at Tabernacle and Bluff Street, St. George Police Officer Jamison Hale said.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a minivan and a truck in the middle turn lane of Bluff with heavy damage to both.
“We had a 2005 GMC pickup westbound on Tabernacle, waiting to turn left onto Bluff Street,” Hale said. The woman driving the truck told officers she looked both directions at the stop sign and believed traffic to be clear. As she started to make a left turn her vehicle was struck by a 2007 Chevy minivan traveling north on Bluff Street.
“The guy in the van said he was going about 35,” Hale said, “which is the speed limit through here. The female driver of the truck turning out thought the other car was coming a little fast.”
The driver of the Chevy van complained of chest pain, likely caused by the deployment of the airbag, while the driver of the Chevy truck likewise had pain in her chest caused by her seat belt. She also said she had a slight headache and minor scratches on her knees, Hale said.
The driver of the pickup truck was issued a citation for failure to yield after the stop sign.
Airbags were deployed on the Chevy van but not in the Chevy truck. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Both drivers refused medical transport.
Northbound traffic on Bluff Street was diverted to a single lane for approximately half an hour.
St. George Police, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the incident.
