Gary LeRoy Hustead

April 9, 1934 — August 14, 2016

On Sunday, August 14, 2016, Gary LeRoy Hustead, age 82, loving husband, father and grandfather, lost his third battle with cancer.  He passed away at his home in Toquerville, Utah, surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born April 9, 1934, in Roosevelt, Utah, to Clyde Lafayette and Cleo Belle Hustead, who later divorced.

He lived his early years in Berkley and then Oakland, California, where he learned hard work starting at age 9, delivering newspapers for the Oakland Tribune.

His teenage years were spent in Roosevelt, Utah, until age 17 when he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a tech sergeant for four years in Georgia. In 1955, Gary returned to Utah and began working at the Salt Lake Police Station. It was during this time that he met and married his sweetheart, Janice JoAn Smith. In 1956, they were sealed in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

Gary attended the University of Utah with studies in Engineering and Business.

Together, Gary and Janice raised nine children, consisting of six boys and three girls. Gary loved his family and spent countless hours with them camping, boating and traveling. He made everyone feel important and loved, always opening his heart and home to those in need.

Gary enjoyed trying new things and loved life. A gifted salesman, Gary worked both for Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals and New York Life. Gary also partnered in a construction company that built LDS chapels.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Janice, and their nine children: Garth Gary (LeAnn) Hustead, Joni DeAn (Eric) Christensen, LeRoy (Kim) Hustead, Kent Robert (Kara) Hustead, Bradley Scott (Tamara) Hustead, Eric John (Kelly) Hustead, Julie Beth (Rusty) Vincent, Amisha Lee Hustead, David Paul Hustead; thirty-one grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Toquerville LDS Chapel, 63 N. Toquerville Blvd, Toquerville, Utah.
  • Visitations will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and on Saturday, prior to services, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the chapel.
  • Interment will be in Toquerville Cemetery.
