ST. GEORGE — A tranquil sweltering afternoon was shattered Tuesday when fire engines raced to the scene of a recreational vehicle that burst into flames on 2330 South Street in St. George.
“About seven tonight (Tuesday) we were paged to reports of a motor home that was on fire,” St. George Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Hooper said. “We arrived and found the engine compartment completely involved in a mid-sized motor home.”
Adam Showell owns the house in front of where the RV ignited, and is also an RV owner.
“Somebody knocked on my door and told me my motor home was on fire. So I thought it was my motor home. I ran inside, it was full of smoke, I ran outside, noticed it wasn’t my motor home, and it was the RV that was parked on the side of the street.”
Showell grabbed a hose and started fighting the fire.
“I tried to put it out with my hose, yelled for someone to call the fire department. The fire department came out promptly. Very promptly, and put it out.”
The Class C RV was destroyed in the blaze.
Hooper said other vehicles could have been involved.
“It was threatening some other recreational vehicles, another motor home and another boat,” Hooper said. “It did cause some property damage to that.”
No injuries were reported, Hooper said, adding that four engines and 16 firefighters were involved in battling the fire, which was extinguished within 10 minutes of their arrival.
Units from the St. George Fire Department, the St. George Police Department, and Gold Cross Ambulance were called to the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
