Prepare to be stunned as you run the newly reinvented Hurricane Half

HURRICANE – The Hurricane Half Marathon has a new race director, a new fall date and a new course that is ready to thrill runners with its stunning scenery.

Set to run Sept. 17, the new course will guide racers through the lush greens of the Sand Hollow Resort golf course and around Sand Hollow Reservoir’s iconic azure waters.

Although the Hurricane Half Marathon has been around since the early 2000s, race director Elizabeth Dansie said, it has seen its fair share of bumps along the way.

Course woes, including a hill not so affectionately known as “nemesis” and an early spring date that often had racers fighting high winds, created a distaste for the race, Dansie said. In 2015 the race was cancelled due to low registration numbers.

This year’s Hurricane Half Marathon and 5K will feature the new, improved course as well as a fall date that should work well for Southern Utah runners tapering (lowering) their training miles in advance of the St. George Marathon, Oct. 1, Dansie said. It will also offer those who have been training through the summer an opportunity to cap off their efforts.

“I feel like we are kind of reinventing it and starting fresh,” Dansie said. “I’m excited, I think it is going to be a really good race.”

Runners will enjoy a loop-course that starts and ends in Sand Hollow Resort and provides breathtaking scenery throughout.

“It’s just so pretty,” Dansie said.

In addition to the views, runners will receive gender-specific race shirts, on-course support provided by Honey Stinger and large finisher medals to celebrate their accomplishments.

“We have really good swag,” Dansie said.

Altra Running Shoes are the title sponsor for the race and registered runners will have chances to win new shoes.

Race pacing for the half marathon will be provided by American Flyers Race Pacers, a Utah-based group that provides pacers to help runners accomplish their time goals.

There will also be a 5K for runners not wishing to do the 13.1-mile distance.

Registration is open now. The cost is $45 for the half marathon and $20 for the 5K. Use promo code MOVIE for $5 off registration.
