WASHINGTON CITY – Hungry for barbecue and want to support veterans? A barbecue fundraiser is the place to be Saturday and organizers say the event will help reach the final financial goal to pay for a new Vietnam veterans monument to be unveiled Sept. 10.

The event will take place at Zion Harley Davidson, 2345 N. Coral Canyon Blvd. in Washington City from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Zion Harley Davidson will also be the permanent home of the new monument which will contain the names of Vietnam veterans both living and deceased.

A flyer for the barbecue fundraiser event states:

Every state has a Vietnam War Memorial that memorializes those who fell during that war. Scant few have monuments that memorialize those who have since fallen … and those who have yet to fall.

The monument has long been the dream of St. George resident Judith Cooley, whose husband was a Vietnam veteran. Cooley’s husband passed away because of complications related to exposure to Agent Orange, which is also referred to as Agent Orange poisoning. The chemical defoliant was used by the United States military as part of an herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam War.

Cooley has been spearheading efforts to get the monument erected for the past 18-plus months and is only about $3,000 shy of the amount needed to pay for the monument, said Valerie King, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Color Country Chapter.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Color Country Chapter will present a check to Cooley during the event in the amount of $1,013; proceeds from the bake sale the patriotic group raised during the Memorial Day ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial Park in SunRiver in May.

The event will feature live music by Classic Country, opportunity drawings for great prizes and delicious barbecue available for purchase.
