CEDAR CITY – Emergency crews treated a 19-year-old woman early Saturday morning for a minor gunshot wound after she was injured by a ricocheted bullet fragment from a gun fired in her direction, authorities said.

The woman was treated and released on scene.

Cedar City Police responded to 1255 N. Cedar Blvd. at around 2:05 a.m. Saturday to reports that 26-year-old Timothy Robert Franklin had pulled a gun out during an alcohol party and threatened the female victim.

After further investigation authorities found the victim had intervened in a fight between the suspect and another woman after Franklin reportedly hit her in the face with his hand, Public Information Officer Clint Pollock said.

At that point, the suspect allegedly took out a .22-caliber and held it to the victim’s head who had stepped in on the other woman’s behalf,” Pollock said.

After hearing the suspect cock the gun, the victim went down on the ground. Franklin then allegedly fired his weapon toward the floor sending the bullet ricocheting. A fragment of the bullet grazed the lower right side of her jaw.

“It could have been really bad,” Pollock said. “Fortunately the gun he was carrying wasn’t a larger handgun, but if it had been it could have been serious.”

Franklin was arrested without incident after police arrived on scene and saw the suspect exit the home. Police ordered him to stop and show his hands. It was then that officers saw the gun on his hip, Pollock said.

Franklin is being held in the Iron County Correctional Facility on $500,000 cash-only bail. He faces charges of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and discharging a firearm, a class B misdemeanor.

uh, yea. sounds like he tried to shoot her in the head and missed, and a .22 will kill a person just fine. kind of a ridiculous statement.
