ST. GEORGE — A hoodlum evidently armed with a BB gun is wreaking havoc in Santa Clara and Ivins, damaging vehicles by shooting out the vehicle windows. The Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department currently has no suspects.

Nine vehicles have been vandalized so far, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Officer Chad Holt said. The incidents have occurred at all hours and at disparate locations throughout the area.

Griselda Pelayo ordinarily parks her Nissan pickup truck inside her garage in Ivins, but recently began parking it on the street, she said. Thursday morning, she and her husband woke up to find the driver’s side window of the truck shattered. Someone had apparently shot it out with a BB gun, she said.

Residents of the area need to pay a little more attention, Pelayo said. When the incident most likely occurred, her dogs began barking but she thought they were barking at the neighbor’s cat.

Pelayo said she believes the culprits are juveniles.

“I want those kids to get punished for what they are doing,” she said. “It’s not right.”

With little information to go on, the local police are hoping that someone will have some evidence soon and call the police or 911 to report the vandal.

If the suspect is seen, Holt said the witness should call the nonemergency police line at 435-627-4300.

In order to minimize the chances of having vehicles damaged, drivers should park their vehicles away from the street if at all possible, Holt said.

Most of the vehicles struck so far have been parked on the street – so, ideally, cars and trucks will be less likely to be vandalized if parked in garages or carports.

What is wrong with people like this? Haven’t they got enough to do? Sounds like snotty teenagers to me. I hope the law catches them and makes them pay all the damages and then some.
