HURRICANE — The Hurricane Valley Choir will present their annual spring concert honoring Armed Forces Day on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Community Center auditorium located at 93 S. 100 West. Admission is free.
The choir was created in October of 2007 by the Hurricane Valley Arts Alliance to offer the opportunity for area singers, from high school to adult, to participate in a community choir. The choir was originally directed by Warren Larsen, but changed directors when Larsen moved out of the area. June Jeffery will conduct this concert, with Camille McCausland as the accompanist.
It is traditional for the choir, during this spring concert, to honor servicemen and women in the area and all are invited to attend and be recognized with their families.
Music for this concert focuses on patriotic and American music, but also includes a little variety. The program opens with “An American Celebration”. A patriotic medley of “This is a Great Country”, “This is My Country”, “You’re a Grand Old Flag”, “America”, “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America”. Other selections include arrangements of folk songs, old gospel tunes, spirituals, movie and popular themes. The program ends with a number of moving patriotic numbers including “A Tribute to the Armed Forces”, and Mary McDonald’s beautiful arrangement of “America”. Soloists will be Kitty Wooldridge, Walt Parker, Karlene Young, Jed Gardner, Lyle Wood, Dave Curl, Barbara Baker, Layne Garner, Tossinee Young, and Marla Gledhill. Special performances will be given by Mack Campbell, Marianna Taylor, and other members of the choir.
