Local home gets makeover during Zions Bank annual event

ST. GEORGE — For the 26th year in a row, Zions Bank employees are providing a community service to help low-income elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners who need a hand in maintaining their homes.

Dozens of local bank employees, youth groups, and others are volunteering to help brighten their neighborhoods by providing fresh paint and landscaping for residents who need help.

With assistance from public nominations, state housing agencies, community organizations and local churches, the St. George Zions Bank employees chose 81-year-old Everal Bowler as the recipient of their generosity this year. Bowler’s home on 100 West in St. George will be scraped and painted this week by volunteers, along with landscaping work and minor repairs.

“We are so proud to roll up our sleeves to help neighbors like Everal spruce up their homes and yards,” Zions Treasury Relationship Manager and Paint-a-Thon team captain Jeff Glines said in a press release. “Not only is the project personally rewarding, but it aligns with Zions Bank’s mission to create value in our communities.”

Bowler said she feels grateful for all the work being done at her home of 37 years.

“I have wanted this done,” Bowler said. “I would come to my house and say, ‘Oh, this looks so awful,’ and yet I couldn’t do it. ”

Bowler couldn’t figure out how she was going to get the work done. And then she was contacted by Zions Bank.

“They came and offered. And I just feel like, wonderful to have this happen to me, because I’ve been a member of this community for a long time. I know it’s a wonderful community,” Bowler said. “People do serve each other around here. Makes me feel good.”

“We help people in the community that can’t help themselves,” Kelsey Madsen, assistant manager of the St. George Boulevard branch of Zions Bank and co-captain of the 2016 Paint-a-Thon said.

“What we’ve done here today, and all week, is the yard was in pretty rough shape, there was about 4 foot tall weeds in the back yard so we chopped all those down, hauled them all off, sprayed for weeds, fixed some windows, you know, just fixing the house up to where it’s a little bit more desirable living conditions for them.”

Bowler was overwhelmed and thrilled to see so many helping hands at her home.

“Thank you very much,” Bowler said to the volunteers. “I’ve been a loyal supporter of Zions Bank since about 1968, but I just think this is wonderful…I appreciate it so much. That’s what I’d like to tell them. It’s something we couldn’t do for ourselves.”
