LEEDS — Local writer, publisher and community volunteer Lyman Hafen will give a presentation about our national parks at the Silver Reef Museum in Leeds. This free event will take place Saturday at 10 a.m.

Hafen has written extensively about growing up in Southern Utah, where he developed a “sense of place” from the unique landscape as well as the unusual residents of the St. George area. He has written 12 books of fiction and nonfiction and has written and directed three documentary films.

A frequent theme of Hafen’s work revolves around the effect that our landscape memories have on the feeling of being at home. When we try to go back to a beloved place, we find that things have changed.

“Nothing is like it used to be,” Hafen said. “But things will always change. What doesn’t change is the memories. You can always keep the memories.”

Included in Hafen’s memories are the distinctive cliffs, mountains and “temples” of Zion National Park. He has spent many hours sharing the beauty of the park and its surroundings with others.

Since 1998, Hafen has served as executive director of the Zion Natural History Association in the park. He founded the Zion Canyon Field Institute in 2003 and the Zion National Park Foundation in 2007. He will share from this expertise at the Silver Reef Museum on Saturday.

The event is free to attend, but donations are greatly appreciated.
