KANAB — Families and runners will gather in Kanab on Mother’s Day weekend for the annual Kanab 10K on May 7. This year’s race organizers are offering a $500 cash reward for the mom who gets the most runners signed up under her name.

Every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, Kanab hosts an annual 10K race. Each year, race organizers offer a fun sign-up perk. This year the goal is to reward the mom who motivates the most family members to stay active and run this traditional Mother’s Day weekend event. Race Director Megan Smith said, “This doesn’t just include getting kids signed up. It can be cousins, uncles, grandchildren or family members in any way.”  There will also be awards for the fastest mother-son and mother-daughter team. Strollers are allowed during the race, so moms and dads can run together with their little ones.

Every mother who participates in the race will be given a rose from Kanab City Mayor Robert Houston as they cross the finish line.

“We want to honor the mothers and all they do,” said Houston.

However, the race isn’t just for mothers; it is open to anyone. The Kanab 10K is an annual tradition for many groups of friends and families. “We love getting together in Kanab for Mother’s Day to run the 10K because it’s a nice time of year, it’s beautiful here and there’s so many fun outdoor adventures to do together over the weekend,” said last-year’s fastest Kanab 10K female, Aubrey Johnson.

All participants must be at Kanab City Park between 6 a.m. – 6:45 a.m. to catch the bus to the starting line. There will be no exceptions for late arrivals. The race will begin at 7 a.m.

Registration for individuals costs $25 until April 30, after which the fee to register is $30. Registration the night before the race is $35. Mother-daughter teams and mother-son teams cost $25 per person.

Don’t miss the “Art in the Park” vendor fair going on at the Kanab City Park located at N. 100 East. The fair will be open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., May 7. This will give attendees a chance to pick up some last-minute Mother’s Day gifts during and after the race for the special moms in their lives. There will also be some delicious post-race treats for sale at the fair.

This is the 29th year of the race. The Kanab 10K course is sanctioned by the USA Track and Field. It begins at Moqui Cave just north of Kanab and goes south on U.S. Highway 89 through a narrow red rock canyon into Kanab and then finishes at the Kanab City Park.
