ST. GEORGE – Cedar’s girls and Desert Hills’ boys used depth, sprinkled with a few first-place finishes, to win the team championships at the 25th annual Pine View Invitational track meet on Saturday.

The Lady Reds scored 129 points to 76 for Desert Hills, 61 for Park City, 53 for Dixie and 48 for Skyline. Fifteen teams scored. The Thunder boys had 120 to 69 for Corner Canyon, 48.5 for Cedar, 47.5 for Hurricane and 47 for Park City. Sixteen teams scored.

“We were pleased, we did well,” said Cedar coach Josh Bennett. He praised the efforts of Julia and Rachel Hunt in the 100, 200 and 400, of Mick Webster, who state-qualified by 12 seconds in the 3200; of Whitney Yardley in the 800; Sam Twitchell in the 300 hurdles and the members of all three relay teams.

“We had quite a few good performances,” Bennett said. “We had a lot of depth with seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths.”

“This meet, we weren’t looking for points. We had some individual goals, but we’ll take this,” said Desert Hills coach Dace Goulding. “We had a sophomore hurdler, Carter Reynolds, who was first in the 110s and second in the 300s; our shot put group scored 30 points and our distance kids did well. Overall it was a pretty good meet.”

One of the multiple winners was Dixie’s Starlee Woodbury, who won the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump, took second in the 100 and helped her team to third in the 4×100-meter relay.

Woodbury said she wasn’t pleased with her hurdle time in the finals.

“I had a better time (Friday) in the trials,” she said. “But my 100 time I was really happy with. And the long jump I don’t know how I won. I only jumped once and scratched the other times.”

Enterprise’s Jaslyn Gardner pushed Woodbury in the 100, winning the event, and also won the 200.

Southern Utah athletes didn’t win all of the events, but they had plenty of first-place finishes. Among them were Snow Canyon’s Keivontae Robinson in the 100; Desert Hills’ Chanse Riding in the discus; Kaylee Carter of Desert Hills in the girls 300-meter hurdles; Hurricane’s Kyler Blackmore in the boys 300-meter hurdles; Cedar’s Whitney Yardley in the girls 800; Panguitch’s Chesney Campbell in the girls high jump and girls javelin; Parowan’s Brandon Robinson in the boys long jump; Pine View’s Nate Choi Leung in the boys javelin; and Desert Hills’ Bradley Earl in the boys 200.

The next major meet for the southern Utah teams is the Desert Hills Invitational on April 22-23.
