St. George Chamber Singers bring 2 spring concerts: St. George, Cedar City

ST. GEORGE— St. George Chamber Singers will present its Spring Concert Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Eccles Fine Arts Center on the campus of Dixie State University. The concert is free to the public and includes selections of the finest chamber music from the Renaissance through the present day.

In addition, the Chamber Singers will present a concert April 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Thorley Recital Hall at Southern Utah University in conjunction with the Red Rock Singers, a chamber choir in Cedar City.

Among the selections  to be presented  are “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine” by  Eric Whitacre,“O Sacrum Convivium” by Olivier Messiaen,“Trois Chansons” by Claude Debussy, “Crucifixus” by Antonio Lotti, “Sing Joyfully” by William Byrd and others.

St. George Chamber Singers is a group of dedicated choral artists who are committed to excellence in vocal chamber music. The choir was formed in 2015 and is under the direction of conductor Dr. Paul Wiens and assistant conductor Dr. Roger Hale.

Wiens conducted choirs at the college level for over 40 years.  He sang in the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Choir under the legendary Robert Shaw and later taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with Robert Fountain.  During his 31 years at Wheaton Conservatory of Music, Wiens’ concert choir appeared regularly at American Choral Directors Association conferences: two national, five central division and three state-level.

Roger Hale joined the faculty at Dixie State University in August 2014. He is director of choral activities at Dixie State where he conducts the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Men’s Chorus.  Hale is a sought-after clinician and guest conductor. His research interests include using technology in the classroom for a more engaged rehearsal. His teaching load includes advanced choral conducting and choral literature.

Auditions for membership in the St. George Chamber Singers for the 2016-2017 season will be held Sept. 7-8, 2016.  Anyone interested in auditioning, please contact Rachel Cox at [email protected].
