CEDAR CITY — Southern Utah artists have just 10 days left to submit an artist response for the Southern Utah Museum of Art’s June 25 inaugural exhibit, “First Peek” — the first official show inside of the newly constructed gallery space.

This exhibit is not just limited to paintings, said Joanne Brattain, Friends of SUMA board member. Submissions can range from sculpture to jewelry, fabric art to glasswork — no general theme required.

“We encourage artists who are interested to submit,” Brattain said, “because it’s a good way to get their name out there and even if they are not selected they still put themselves on the radar.”

The purpose of the show is to thank the artists and donors who have contributed to the museum through the years, Brattain said, adding that First Peek replaces the art auction held every spring to raise money for the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery at Southern Utah University.

Art from the First Peek exhibit will be displayed in the museum from June 25 to July 15 and will feature 35 juried pieces that display a wide range of artistic values, Brattain said.

There are five galleries inside the new building with movable walls. The gallery space is 6,600 square feet, Brattain said, with an additional 3,800 square feet of storage and preservation space. The front patio can be used to extend showroom capacity for special events.

June 25 is truly a sneak peek event, according to the museum’s website.

The Southern Utah Museum of Art’s official opening won’t take place until July 7 when Southern Utah University celebrates the completion of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts complex, which houses both the museum and the Shakespeare Festival’s new outdoor performance stage, the Englestad Theatre. The new theater incorporates a courtyard with a greenshow stage, rehearsal space, a costume studio and offices for the festival’s administration and staff.

“We at the Utah Shakespeare Festival are proud to be a part of the complex that will house SUMA and create such a fantastic space for artistic expression in the community,” said Joshua Stavros, Utah Shakespeare Festival media relations manager.
