HURRICANE – A teen carrying what appeared to be a sword down a street Friday morning caused a concerned citizen to call the Hurricane Police Department. Though it appeared suspicious, the sword turned out to be a project the teen was taking to school.

Around 11:30 a.m., a 17-year-old Hurricane High student was carrying a homemade replica of a Samurai sword he was making in shop class, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

“Somebody saw it and it looked suspicious and called it in,” Buell said.

Initially there was a worry that the teen was walking toward Hurricane Middle School with the sword, but that was not the case. Officers ultimately found the teen in shop class working on the sword and were able to resolve the issue without incident.

There was no threat to anyone at the school and no threats made, Buell said.

While the call to police turned out to be something harmless, the police would rather people call them if something seems suspicious rather than letting it slip by.

The possibility of someone taking a weapon into a school with malicious intent is a scenario no one wants, Beull said.

Law enforcement officials in general have said reporting a strange situation to police, who then discover the incident is a simple misunderstanding, is far better than the alternative.

“Someone walking around with a sword will draw attention,” Buell said.
