Gross won the 200-yard individual medley at the BYU pool. Wallace won the 50-yard freestyle.

Boys and girls each completed four of the 12 events with the remainder scheduled for today.

“This feels so good,” said Gross. “I’ve been working on this for months and months. I had high hopes because I’ve been working so hard. It was my best mark by three seconds.”

“It was a great race,” Wallace said of his competition. “I would have liked to swim faster, but I can’t complain. I took first.”

Megan Draney of Snow Canyon placed second in the girls 200-yard freestyle while Hurricane’s Ryan Bunn was second in the boys 200-freestyle.

“I’ve been here before for state meets with my club team,” said Bunn, a freshman. “But it’s a different experience on a high school team. We’re more unified. I’m a little disappointed, but still glad I got second place. We all came in here trying to get the same thing.”

Kristen Gross, Katelyn’s sister, finished second in the 50-yard freestyle for the Lady Reds.

“I so dropped time and I improved the school record,” Gross said. “I was stiff earlier in the week, so I feel really good about second.”
