CEDAR CITY – Eight of the 14 top-ranked wrestlers in Class 3A will be in action at Cedar City High School on Friday and Saturday. They will be among approximately 200 seeking to earn spots at next week’s state tournament at Utah Valley University. There are eight spots available in each weight class.
“The next two weeks are what we’ve been leading up to,” Snow Canyon coach Nick Lang posted on the team’s Website. “Everything up to this point has been practice for the next two weeks.” The other coaches echoed those sentiments.
Competition begins at 11 a.m. Friday and features nine rounds over two days. Championship semifinals will begin at 4 p.m. that day. Saturday’s finals will also begin at 4 p.m. Placement rounds are interspersed throughout the day.
According to wrestleutah.com, Juab is the top-ranked team in the state. The Wasps will bring four top-rated wrestlers into Cedar City. They include Gentry Warner at 106 pounds, Mason Mangelson at 145, Joey Aggard at 160 and Ashton Seely at 182.
Canyon View’s Brady Lowry is the top-ranked wrestler at 120 pounds with Chance Bundy of Desert Hills the leader at 132. The Thunder’s Liam Williams is tops at 152 and Snow Canyon’s Desmond Wise is No. 1 at 285 pounds.
Cedar City won the Region 9 championship and has the advantage of being at home. The coaches of the 11 teams spent a good part of Thursday evening determining the seedings of their wrestlers.
Among the other wrestlers to watch include Snow Canyon’s Reese Jones and Pine View’s Randall Donn at 113, Cedar’s Sandon Stokes and the Warriors’ Kody Hafen at 120, Dixie’s Hobbs Nyberg at 138, Hurricane’s Devin English at 152, Canyon View’s Eric Gourde at 160, Pine View’s Brenr Nelson at 182 and Cedar’s McCrae Murray at 195.
